Unfair?

She always left home before her husband and her precious boys. She kissed each one of them on their foreheads and thought how difficult the last few days have been. It was just too much for her to see her sons suffering. She heard them crying the night before hiding away from her. And that hurt even more. She knew it was something at school, comments from other kids. It had already happened before. They didn't have friends, just because of where she was from. She couldn't change the fact that she was a foreigner and there was nothing she could do to solve her boys’ problems. It made her feel powerless and that was what upset her the most. It was just not fair…

She left home late for work. Stopped at a petrol station to fill up her car. An old lady was in front of her in the queue to pay. When the lady’s turn arrived she took a long time to pay for the 2 or 3 unimportant items she was purchasing. She was the one with bills to pay and late to get to work! She should be the one with priority, her job was more important. Why this woman needed to buy these things at rush hour? The old lady looked back apologising but she only nodded her head in disapproval making sure she showed her discontentment.

She finally arrived at work, walking fast through the corridor she saw one of her colleagues coming in the opposite direction still some distance away. She didn't like her much, always dressed in a strange way, had a funny hair and was always showing too much, it just wasn't decent. She looked down at some paperwork she was carrying with her at the exact moment the woman passed by just so that she didn't need to say hello.

Later she left for her lunch and decided to buy a sandwich at the local deli. She looked through the window and noticed it was the gay man that was working. She didn't mind gay people but he was just a bit too much, his behaviour, the way he speaks. She kept telling herself that it wasn't his sexual choice, she would feel the same way if he were straight, it was just his behaviour.

She walked back to the office when she saw a group of teenagers laughing and joking. They had darker skin, tattoos, hats and piercing. She didn't feel safe and decided to cross the street.

She sat down at her desk and the 20 years old manager came into the office to ask for some help. She got annoyed and treated her coldly thinking how they could hire someone so young and inexperienced to do such an important job.

She left work anxious to get home and spend time with her precious family. She walked pass a man sweeping the streets. He was on her way and that made her stop to wait for him. He haven’t seen her, he was just doing his job looking down. But she was impatient and thought he should pay more attention to the people trying to pass by, they had important things to do, places to get to.

She finally arrived home and found her two little boys crying and playing alone once more. They were bullied at school again. Her heart broke. It was just unfair! She felt powerless. Why me? Why my boys? What kind of society do we live in?

The one we create…

Unless we change the way we think and live our lives racism and prejudice will always be present. It’s much bigger than just actions or words against other people. It comes in all shapes and forms. It starts with how we think and see the world. Unless each one of us start to change it will be just transferred from generation to generation. We are all different and will always be. I choose to live in a world where we accept each other and our differences with love. Hope you also do…

Injusto?

Happy Mother’s day, everyday of your life!

My Mom?
I'm not going to say she is perfect since no one is. Yes, we had our arguments and fights over the years. Things I didn't understand, she didn't understand.
I'm not a mother so many may say I won’t comprehend. But just considering becoming a mother one day and giving up what my life is makes me think how selfless mother’s are. My mother dedicated all her life to have and raise my two brothers and I.
As all mothers she didn't study or train to be one, she just learnt along the way. And even if everything was not perfect it was just right to shape me into the person I'm today. And I'm grateful!
For all the sleepless nights, the fear of making mistakes, the departed dreams, the protection, the love.
And I can only imagine how much love it takes to insist to your daughter to move away from you, to another country laying in a hospital bed when needing her most. I decided not to go and stay with you but you’re braver than me and persisted so that I wouldn't give up my dreams and let the opportunity slip away.
Or the countless times life broke me up and you were there to pick up the pieces and make me stand again. You are always my safe harbour.
Thank you mother, that’s all I can say. It will never be enough but also know that I love you more than words can express.
Happy Mother’s day, everyday of your life!

An unforgettable encounter

The sun was shining through the trees but I didn't notice it. I was walking fast thinking that I was already late. It didn't matter how much I planned it seemed I would always end up being caught up on something that would make me late. I'm looking down at the floor as I walk, maybe just afraid to get distracted by something else. A sudden wind blows and I feel on my face. It makes me look up for a moment and I notice a group of people surrounding a man that had his back facing me. It makes me curious, so I slow down to have a glance of what made all those people stop their days.

An Owl! Beautiful and large! Who wouldn't stop and admire that gorgeous bird. The closest I have ever come to one. It notices my presence and moves its head to face me. Those large enchanting orange eyes starring at me. We remained like that, staring into each other's eyes for what felt like a long time. We exchanged something that I just couldn't explain.

The worry and stress was gone. Nothing could be more important than that moment, that opportunity. So much beauty and presence, I could only admire its magnificence.  I realise that I had a shy smile for as long as I stood there admiring. That encounter had just changed my day, me. I could no longer walk looking down, it was too limiting. What would I lose walking the way I was doing before? That owl waked me up and made me aware of the moment. An unforgettable encounter….

She arrives at home excited, I wasn't sure about what. But that wasn't something rare with her. She was different, simple things enchanted her. Her biggest passion was nature, the changes of the seasons, the shapes, colours… A simple flower could occupy a 15 minutes conversation.

“You won’t believe what happened to me!” she says looking for something on her phone. She shows me a picture of an owl sitting on a man’s arm.
“Cool, what happened, did you see it somewhere?”
“Yes, I was late walking on the park, but then I met her”
“You met her? What do you mean, its a bird!”
“I mean it connected with me, I couldn't do anything else other than stop and admire. The eyes, the size, its presence. I still can’t stop thinking about it.” She says softly.
“That’s a little crazy, no?” I say trying to comprehend.
“Its is crazy and hard to explain. It just made me feel better as nothing else would. It woke me up and made me see that there is more to life…”

She had this sparkle in her eyes, this tone in her voice, this enthusiasm and passion. I couldn't stop admiring her. I would never fall in love with a bird, like she could. Nevertheless that just made me love her even a little bit more…

Ela percebe minha presença e move a cabeça para me olhar. Os olhos laranjados grandes e encantadores olhando-me.

Essa coruja me despertou e me fez tomar consciência do momento.

"Você a conheceu? O que quer dizer, é um pássaro! "
"Ela diz suavemente.
"Isso é um pouco doido, não?" Eu digo tentando compreender.
"É doido e difícil de explicar. Ela me fez sentir melhor como nenhuma outra coisa faria. Ela me acordou e me fez ver que existe mais na vida ... "
